lunch at a small charming Nepalese restaurant in Kalaw. we ordered a bottle of local "wine"

with Shanti, one of seven sisters. the owner of the restaurant has 7 daughters, and the restaurant is nicknamed Seven Sisters (reminded me of the fairy tale)

the town of Kalaw. it's an old colonial British hillstation, about 4500 ft above sea-level. the temperature's nice and cool, and its a quiet and charming little place

hmm, which way is Bangladesh from here?

walking around hilly terrain with baby strapped in front, big basket of goods in the back and an umbrella in your free hand. in the US you'd probably be reported to child welfare agencies for "endangering" your baby like this

how many people can you fit on a truck?

as foreigners, we had to pay a special fee to enter the Inle area

we were able to get pretty authentic tasting caipirinhas at this little place in the town of Nyaung Shwe. some tourist had taught the owner how to make them. we were so happy!

walking through the town of Nyaung Shwe at dawn. already lost of people around, everyone is going to Inle Lake for the festival

we were on our boat on Inle Lake at 5 am. this day was the culmination of the Phaung Daw U festival, which takes place here over a period of 20 days, and is the biggest festival of the year in Shan State

we felt so lucky to be in Inle on this day. we hadn't planned our trip to Burma to coincide with this festival, but once there & we'd heard about it of course we had to experience it. what amazing timing

Inle Lake filling up with boatloads of people. thousands of people & the many tribes of Shan State come for pilgrimage at this time (the town of Nyaung Shwe was packed for the festival with fairs, food stalls - excitement was in the air everywhere)

Chuck happy on our boat. we're not morning-people and getting up before dawn is anathema to us. but this was definitely worth it

the leg-rowing boat competition has started. the Intha men (who live on Inle Lake) row standing up, with one leg. each of the procession boats has people playing music, drumming, singing while the rowers row away in unison with their legs
