people of the village were already preparing for Durga Puja (biggest hindu festival in Bangladesh) which was 3 months away. these clay sculptures (on either side of baby taxi) were baking in the sun. later, they'd be painted for the puja
lots of clay sculptures in a hut waiting to be painted and prepared for Durga Puja
Ammu, Abbu (my dad), and me. we walked around the village and chatted with the people there. the kids were all very excited to see digital pics of themselves
look at the hut in the background - the huts had pretty designs on them (usually huts in the villages blend in with the environment). the man to the left was very nice & friendly and showed us around this hindu village & the temples
one of the temples surrounding the main Aat-Chala Temple in Chandina (the main one is a 19th century Shiva temple)
another temple in the complex

Abbu, Chuck, and Ammu chatting and checking out the temples. the center pavilion is where the people gather together for the festivals

that's a sculpture of Durga inside this temple

Maynamati War Cemetary on the outskirts of Comilla. Allied (British, Indian, African, Canadian) and Japanese soldiers from WWII are buried here. so strange to think of them fighting and dying here.
grave of an even younger British soldier. all the British graves had inscriptions from the families, unlike the graves of other Allied soldiers. The Japanese graves had only names (as enemy soldiers, maybe not much more info was available)
grave of a young Canadian soldier
plaque with info on the cemetary and the war in the area
one of my favourite flowers from my childhood, they used to grow in my grandmother's garden but i hadn't seen them since. i found them growing in the cemetary
Chuck at the Mainamati Ruins. these are the famous Buddhist ruins from the 6th to 13th centuries. this is the center temple in the Salban Vihara, which was a monastery. the monks' cells surround the courtyard around the temple
Anika in the Salban Vihara. you can see the ruins of the monks' cells in the background.

Abbu trying to protect himself from the intense afternoon sun

me & Chuck in front of the Comilla Nawab Bari (Nawabs were Muslim rulers). my mom's aunt spent her life here-we used to visit her when i was little. the Nawabs (her family) used to own all the land around - now part of the town
Ammu & Chuck on the steps to the entrance of the house. there used to be a moat surrounding the lawn (and the pond in the back) around the house. u can still see the moat, but there's no water in it now
