We went to Kathmandu's Pashupatinath temple at dusk, not expecting to really see much, everyone goes during the day. however, it turned out to be quite an amazing experience not possible to convey in these photos
Cremation. i'd never been this close to a human body being burnt. it was so ordinary and surreal at the same time
the temple complex is old and sprawling. this is looking across the narrow Bagmati river from the Arya Ghat to the terrace of the temple on the other bank
some religious performance was going on - devotional songs and music, sadhus hanging out, and some frenzied frenetic dancing
not much left of the body at this point
looking down onto the cremation from the other side of the ghat, surrounded by death, life, music and dancing all at the same time
crowds of people were gathered here in the dark to watch these religious performers
after a while, people from the crowd started jumping into the performance area & dancing like mad. men, women -they were in a trancelike state. "trance" now conjures something so different, it's hard to convey the intensity of the moment
